Taxonomy on Carabusonline
At Carabusonline.co.uk we are aware of the different classification systems that are currently in use. The two most up-to-date are:
- Updated checklist of the genus Carabus (Boleslav Brezina, 2003)
- Liste Blumethal 2007 (Thierry Deuve, 2007)
We have decided to use the Liste Blumethal taxonomy both because it is more up to date and because it has tried to include information from recent molecular studies. However it is still far too early to name a definitive taxonomy.
There are several subgenera where the differences in taxonomy will be apparent. For example in the Deuve taxonomy Diocarabus has been synonimised with Tomocarabus, and Coptolabrus with Damaster. The Deuve taxonomy also stricter on specific and subspecific genera and so many subspecies and natios are now listed as individual forms.
At the moment there is still much work left to be done before we have a conclusive Carabus taxonomy and it is fair to say that the current system is far from satisfactory. We hope you understand why we have chosen the system we have, and we encourage you to discuss it in the forums. If you have any queries please don't hesitate to contact us.
